About this deal

Its just rained and there is a mistiness about the fallen trees and dried leaves crunching under my feet. I enjoy aromatherapy and was drawn to this fragrance because it reminds me of a natural wellness center where they use pure essential oils for their massages. YSL Kouros is an example of a vintage frag that is still strong, so im not being a hater on reformulations in general here. There is a lot of pink pepper, woods, pine needles and oakmoss, a bit of rose, jasmine, ylang ylang and I think, galbanum. Sacrilegious to suggest it should be an ambient scent I suppose; but that should be a testament to the original fragrance story being painted.

Fast forward at least a day, maybe it was more like three, I was walking around, and had that "oh my god, what is that amazing smell? I recently bought a travel size and when I uncapped it and took a sniff at home it didn't smell anything like I remembered. As she sauntered past my desk I was enveloped and over come by the most dark, fragrant, complex and intriguing perfume that I had ever smelled. I’m not a big patchouly fan so it might be that mixed with the coriander and sage was what annoyed me? I’ve just obtained a bottle of this and I now realise this is the slightly overpowering scent I have smelt before on so many classy mature older women.

It *is* a bewitching brew - it keeps me sniffing, interested, enjoying the scents I encounter, and coming back for more. The current version, well, I do not want to be negative, but just let me say that this evoked the following evening when a skunk walked into the tent.

Now if you go looking for a vintage be aware that it used to have something in it that would definitely go off after awhile so your likelihood of getting a spoiled vintage bottle is highly probable. I already feel that I have a deep connection with AE but I can’t wear it fully yet, the oakmoss is in my throat in this one.Because the incense and oakmoss notes are not too heavy on my skin (compared to application on fabrics), I think I might be able to pull Aromatics Elixir off in warmer weathers because I like wearing herbal scents that are light and bitter in the summer. However AE is such a distinctive and utterly unique fragrance, I think if there were any major reformulations more people would have taken note and complained, as they have with other Lauder classics. On fabric I find that it leans way too bitter (almost like medicinal iodine) as opposed to the softer, fresher green development on skin. It's not so usual to smell it anymore going out and I noticed that it had disappered from my Clinique counter. I realized, looking at my favorite perfumes, that I've been chasing after Bernard Chant and his talented nose.

If you want the male - and less expensive - version of Aromatics, get Aramis 900, they're virtually one and the same scent. On first spray (forearm and wrist), the most prominent notes I'm getting are the chamomile and Oakmoss. I know that your tastes change as you get older, but I've never been a rose person, and this sweet, slightly spicy, warm scent screams ROSE! AE is none of these: it makes its presence known, shows a depth that it is rarely found even in the most flossy of current niche fragrances, and has qualities that immediately make the wearer feel wrapped up and comforted (even if its over-application comes at the expense of the wearer's company). It is a unique scent in the current crop of fragrances, and is best worn by a woman with “presence”. To me, this vibe is so hard to find, I absolutely love the scent, and would just about drink it if meant my skin would radiate this smell, but the performance killed it. After a while, this megablast of a "note" is supposed to dissipate, leaving its place to the aroma of a wonderful autumn walk in a damp, rainy forest. But as I age and start to appreciate the beauties of the true bitter chypres, I realize that this perfume (a reformulation of Chant's original creation, alas, but it smells pretty much like what I remember) does indeed have a pretty floral heart.
